Osteoarthritis

What is osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a common condition in pets that refers to inflammation and degeneration of the joints. Just like in humans, arthritis in pets can cause discomfort, pain, and reduced mobility. It can affect various joints, such as the hips, knees, elbows, and spine, and is commonly seen in older dogs and cats. Arthritis can develop due to a combination of factors, including age, genetics, obesity, joint trauma, or underlying health conditions. Over time, the cartilage in the joints wears down, resulting in friction between bones and causing pain and stiffness. Pets with arthritis may exhibit symptoms such as difficulty getting up or lying down, limping, reluctance to walk or play, decreased activity levels, and changes in behavior.

How do we treat osteoarthritis?

Rehab can play a significant role in managing arthritis in pets and improving their overall well-being. Therapeutic exercises and techniques performed under the guidance of a rehab professional can help alleviate pain, increase joint mobility, and enhance muscle strength and flexibility. Rehab aims to reduce inflammation, prevent further joint degeneration, and promote better functionality in affected areas. Modalities such as therapeutic ultrasound, cold laser therapy, TENS, and pulsed electormagnetic field can be utilized to provide targeted pain relief and promote healing. Additionally, manual therapies like massage, stretching, joint mobilizations, and range of motion exercises can help improve joint flexibility and reduce stiffness. Rehab also includes gait training and balance exercises to enhance mobility and coordination. Furthermore, pet owners are often educated on home exercises and techniques they can perform to supplement the therapy sessions. By implementing a comprehensive rehab program, pets with arthritis can experience reduced pain, improved joint function, increased activity levels, and a better quality of life.
