What is a CCL injury?

The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), also known as the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in humans, is a vital ligament located inside the knee joint of animals. It plays a crucial role in stabilizing the joint by connecting the femur (thigh bone) to the tibia (shin bone). The CCL helps prevent excessive forward movement of the tibia in relation to the femur and provides stability during weight-bearing activities like walking, running, and jumping. Unfortunately, the CCL is prone to injury or tearing, especially in dogs, due to factors such as age, obesity, breed predisposition, or physical trauma. A ruptured CCL can cause pain, lameness, and instability in the affected leg, often requiring veterinary intervention and potential surgical repair to restore normal joint function and prevent further damage.

What are the treatment options?

When it comes to treating a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear in dogs, several options are available depending on the severity of the injury, the dog's size, age, and overall health. One commonly recommended surgical option is Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO), which involves repositioning the bones to stabilize the knee joint and promote healing. Another surgical approach is extracapsular repair, where a strong suture is used to support the knee joint and compensate for the torn ligament. This is generally recommended for smaller dogs. These surgical procedures aim to restore stability and function to the affected leg. In cases where surgery is not a viable option, a custom orthotic from OrthoPets may be considered. This specially designed brace can provide support, stability, and enhanced mobility to the affected leg, aiding in the healing process. Additionally, conservative management, which involves medication for pain and inflammation control, along with a structured rehabilitation program, can be pursued. This approach focuses on strengthening the surrounding muscles, improving joint stability, and promoting healing through controlled exercise, modalities, and hands on techniques.
