This home program was created by Dr. Erica Kirsch with Head2Tail Mobility. This is intended as a general home program for dogs with medial patellar luxations. These exercises should not be started without a recommendation from your veterinarian. This is not intended to be a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Never force any of these exercises or treatments. If your dog seems painful with them or doesn’t like them, then STOP and consult with your veterinarian. Heat Pack
Place a heat pack with a towel or heating pad over the front and inner thigh for 15-20 minutes, twice a day. Be sure to check the temperature and make sure it is not too hot.
2. Massage Quad & Sartorius
The quadriceps and sartorius are muscles on the front of the back leg. These muscles are often tight when the CCL is torn. Gentle massage over the front of the leg with light pressure. Start with long strokes and then progress to light kneading. Perform for 3 minutes twice a day.
3. Hip Extension Stretch
This stretch will help open up the hip which is often tight. Support your dog’s leg at the knee and ankle. Gently push the leg back until you feel some light resistance or your dog pulls their leg back. Hold for 30 seconds for 2 rounds twice a day. THIS EXERCISE SHOULD ONLY BE PERFORMED IF THE PATELLA STAYS IN PLACE.
4. Hip Abduction Stretch
This stretch will open up the inner thigh. Move the back leg into a neutral position so that it is 90 degrees to the body. Gently lift the leg away from the body's midline, maintaining a straight position. Use your hand to keep their back from rotating. Avoid turning the leg outward as you lift. Hold for 30 seconds and do 2 rounds twice a day. THIS EXERCISE SHOULD ONLY BE PERFORMED IF THE PATELLA STAYS IN PLACE.
