Hind Limb Arthritis Home Program
This home program was created by Dr. Erica Kirsch with Head2Tail Mobility. This is intended as a general home program for dogs with hind limb arthritis. These exercises should not be started without a recommendation from your veterinarian. This is not intended to be a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Never force any of these exercises or treatments. If your dog seems painful with them or doesn’t like them, then STOP and consult with your veterinarian. Heat Pack to Affected Joint
Place a heat pack with a towel or heating pad over the affected joint for 15-20 minutes. Be sure to check the temperature and make sure it is not too hot.
2. Shoulder & Back Massage
Start with massage over the shoulders. Begin with long slow strokes then work into kneading strokes. Then massage along the spine from behind the ears to the base of the tail. Start with long gentle strokes and work into kneading strokes. Perform for 5 minutes.
3. Bicycling Hind Leg
Have your dog lie on their side. Hold one knee and one hand at the ankle. Gentle push the leg forward, then down, then back, then tuck the leg back up towards the body. The leg should move in a full bicycle motion. Repeat 10 times twice a day.
4. Step Stretch
This stretch will open up the back legs. Have your dog place their front feet on a step (2-4 inches for small dogs, 6-12 inches for large dogs). Lure them slightly forward so that they stretch out their back legs slightly. Hold for 30 seconds for 2 rounds twice a day.
5. Forelimb 3 Leg Stand
This exercise will help your dog strengthen their back legs. With your dog in a square stand, gently lift one of the front paws. Hold for 5 seconds then lower. Repeat on the other front leg. Your dog should keep their back feet in place and not step. Repeat 5 times each side twice a day.
