CCL TEAR HOME PROGRAM
This home program was created by Dr. Erica Kirsch with Head2Tail Mobility. This is intended as a general home program for dogs with CCL tears. These exercises should not be started without a recommendation from your veterinarian. This is not intended to be a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Never force any of these exercises or treatments. If your dog seems painful with them or doesn’t like them, then STOP and consult with your veterinarian. Cold Pack
Place a cold pack with a damp towel over the knee joint for 15-20 minutes twice a day.
2. Massage Quad & Sartorius
The quadriceps and sartorius are muscles on the front of the back leg. These muscles are often tight when the CCL is torn. Gentle massage over the front of the leg with light pressure. Start with long strokes and then progress to light kneading. Perform for 3 minutes twice a day.
3. Hip Extension Stretch
This stretch will help open up the hip which is often tight. Support your dog’s leg at the knee and ankle. Gently push the leg back until you feel some light resistance or your dog pulls their leg back. Hold for 30 seconds for 2 rounds twice a day.
4. Rock Back Exercise
This exercise is intended to make the hamstrings fire which can help stabilize the knee joint. With your dog standing square, hold a treat right at their mouth. Push the treat back just an inch so that they shift their weight into the back legs. If your dog steps with their back leg the movement was too big. Repeat 10 repetitions twice a day.
